The British Curriculum Year Group Model
TOWIS follows the British curriculum model for year group placement. A student’s year group is determined by their chronological age on 1 September of the academic year. This is the same rule used in all UK schools and all Cambridge International schools following the British curriculum model.
This means: if your child turns 7 on any date between 1 September and 31 August of the academic year, they are in Year 2 for that full academic year. The specific date within the year does not change the year group — only whether the birthday falls before or after 1 September.
The 1 September cut-off date is not arbitrary. It is the internationally agreed standard for British curriculum year group placement and is followed consistently at every Cambridge International school worldwide. TOWIS does not deviate from this standard except in the most exceptional and carefully considered circumstances.

The table below shows the correct year group for each student based on their date of birth for the academic year 2026–2027 (September 2026 – August 2027).

Note: All birth dates are inclusive. A student born on 1 September 2015 is in Year 7. A student born on 31 August 2015 is in Year 6.
Exceptions to Age-Appropriate Placement — The Principal’s Position
The British curriculum places students in their chronological year group as the default and the norm. At TOWIS, this default is maintained in almost all cases. Placement outside the age-appropriate year group is not a routine admissions option — it is an exceptional measure considered only in narrowly defined circumstances.

| Exceptions considered | A request for out-of-year-group placement is considered only where: (a) compelling educational evidence — such as a formal educational psychology report or Cambridge assessment data — demonstrates that age-appropriate placement would be educationally harmful, AND (b) the student’s parents have discussed the matter fully with the Principal and understand the long-term implications. |
| Who decides | The Principal makes all decisions regarding year group placement. No exception is granted without a formal meeting with the family, a review of all available assessment data, and written consent from all parties. |
| The IGCSE concern | The school’s overriding concern in any placement decision is the student’s long-term academic trajectory — particularly their ability to complete the Cambridge IGCSE programme at the appropriate age. Myanmar law sets military conscription at age 18 for male students. A student placed one or more years behind their chronological age group risks reaching Year 11 at an age where completion of IGCSE is disrupted by conscription. TOWIS takes this risk very seriously and factors it into every placement decision. |
| Placement above chronological year group | Placing a student ahead of their chronological year group is even more rarely considered. Such a decision must be supported by exceptional cognitive and attainment evidence, and the student must be socially and emotionally mature enough to thrive with older peers. |
Year group placement is not about what is easiest for a student today — it is about what is right for them across their entire school career. A student placed in an age-appropriate year group who finds the academic content challenging is a student who can be taught, supported, and challenged. A student placed incorrectly who falls outside the IGCSE window may lose the opportunity to complete their international qualifications at the right time. We take that responsibility seriously.
How to Work Out Your Child’s Year Group
To identify your child’s correct year group for 2026–2027:
- Find your child’s date of birth.
- Determine how old they will be on 1 September 2026.
- Match that age to the table above — that is your child’s year group.
Three Worked Examples
Example 1: Child born 15 March 2015
Age on 1 September 2026 = 11 years old (turned 11 before 1 September 2026). → Year 7.
Example 2: Child born 20 November 2015
Age on 1 September 2026 = 10 years old (will not turn 11 until November 2026). → Year 6.
Example 3: Child born 1 September 2015
Age on 1 September 2026 = exactly 11 years old (birthday is on 1 September). → Year 7. Students who turn the relevant age on 1 September itself are placed in the older year group.
